Albert Bichot Horizons Chardonnay 2024

The wine is absolutely delicious. It seems almost too good for the price on the bottle if there is such a thing. I love it because it’s simple yet elegant, with complex flavors that slowly unwind with time in the glass. It’s crazy because after a few sips, you’d swear it’s unoaked, but it’s actually partly aged in oak. They ferment some in stainless steel, some in oak barrels, then age it 6-9 months on the lees in traditional Burgundian barrels. You get the fresh fruit of unoaked Chardonnay with a subtle richness and complexity — nothing buttery and no overdone oak.

This one leads with inviting aromas of white flowers and citrus, followed by white peach and hazelnut. Fresh almonds and grapefruit on the palate, with some white flowers and a hint of vanilla. This is one rocking value.

Much like finding truly great under $30 Cabernet, my hunt for excellent sub-$25 Chardonnay can be a Herculean task these days. That’s why I feel a little bit like a dope for it to take me this long to hook up with one of the most consistent and revered wine estates in the world, Albert Bichot.

Now in their sixth generation, Albert Bichot continues to upgrade their unprecedented holdings in the region. They’re one of the few to have properties that span all five key Burgundian regions (Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais), allowing them to source from the region’s finest terroirs. Everything they do now is sustainable and completely organic, and the wines have never been better.

They know Chardonnay better than almost anyone. So when they decided to apply that knowledge to more affordable fruit from Limoux, they weren’t cutting corners—they were proving a point and reaching a different crowd.
