Babich Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Black Label 2024

91 Points, James Suckling

The newly-released Babich Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Black Label is an electric and highly scored bottling once again. And Wine Spectator hasn’t even gotten a hold of it yet! Once they do (it’s been their top-rated under $20 NZ Sauv Blanc two years running), it might be too late!

This is super fresh and fruit-forward with white flower notes to complement fresh apricot, key lime, grapefruit zest, lemongrass, and citrus flavors. It’s the depth and energy that I can rarely find outside of the best hills in Sancerre, all braced by a mineral zip that ties it all together to perfection. Just like its predecessor, it comes with some big-time scores, including a 91-point review from James Suckling and a coveted ‘Best Buy’ designation from Wine Enthusiast

Original price was: $19.00.Current price is: $15.50.

Fruity and delicious, showing limes, papaya and sliced almonds on the nose. Medium-bodied with juicy acidity. Round with a mouthwatering finish. Sustainable. Drink now. Screw cap.

Babich Wines holds a unique position as New Zealand’s most experienced family-owned winery, with a legacy stretching back over 110 years. While many of Marlborough’s heavyweights are corporate-owned, Babich remains a multi-generational labor of love founded by Josip Babich in 1916. Their iconic status isn’t just about longevity; it’s about their pioneering foresight and making delicious, highly scored wines that people can’t get enough of.

They were among the first to recognize that Marlborough wasn’t a monolith, strategically securing prime real estate across the Wairau, Waihopai, and Awatere Valleys long before the region became a global sensation. This early entry allowed them to pick the “best seats in the house,” providing a foundation of mature vines and superior sites that younger labels simply cannot replicate. They’re playing with a stacked deck!
