Jefferson’s Reserve Limited Edition Cask Strength Bourbon

#6 Whiskey of the Year (2025 Whisky Advocate Top 20)

95 Points, Whisky Advocate

Jefferson’s 8-Year Cask Strength Bourbon landed at #6 on Whisky Advocate’s Whiskey of the Year list with 95 points. Whisky Advocate noted it was the “highest-scoring Jefferson’s expression in many years” and “a stunning whiskey” with “beautiful harmony” in their rave review.

This is Jefferson’s first cask-strength expression, an eight-year wonder that checks in at 130 Proof. There’s so much depth and chocolatey flavors complemented by black pepper, caramel and creamy crème brûlée notes, somehow you almost miss the heat and that warm Kentucky hug. Considering the high % of alc., it’s a pretty incredible feat, but not surprising if you’ve been a Jefferson’s diehard as I’ve been over the years.

95 Points, Whisky Advocate
Father and son Chet and Trey Zoeller founded Jefferson’s Bourbon back in 1997, inspired by a family distilling pedigree dating back to 1799. Jefferson’s has been best known for its Ocean whiskeys, aged on ships that sail to ports around the world. But its Reserve bourbon is also very popular, and this spring the label added its first cask-strength expression. As our highest-scoring Jefferson’s expression in many years, it’s a stunning whiskey. Rich dessert flavors of chocolate, vanilla taffy, melted caramel, crème brûlée, and strawberry jam sprinkled with pepper spice are wrapped in oak, earthiness, and spice, all working together in beautiful harmony.

Somehow, Jefferson’s seems to find that quality as consistently as any place I’ve tasted.

We’ve done over a dozen barrels with them now throughout the years, and each one has had to clear an incredibly high hurdle. And somehow, they never stop hitting ball out of the park.

Jefferson’s is best known for its Ocean whiskeys aged on ships sailing around the world, but this spring, they added their first cask-strength expression, an eight-year wonder that checks in at 130 Proof. It turned out to be a game-changer for Jefferson’s.

With so much depth and chocolatey flavor complemented by black pepper, caramel and creamy crème brûlée notes, somehow you almost miss the heat. Considering the alc %, that is an insane feat, but not surprising if you’ve been a Jefferson’s diehard as I’ve been over the years.
