John Anthony Sauvignon Blanc Carneros 2023

90 Points, James Suckling

John Anthony Truchard blends state-of-the-art farming practices with immense knowledge passed down from years of working with pioneering farmers. The advantage isn’t just the experience – it’s having multiple locations throughout Napa Valley, each meticulously selected for unique microclimates, soil types, and sun exposures.

This Carneros Sauvignon Blanc scored 90 points from James Suckling, who calls it “vivid” with “richer, fruit-forward expression” featuring “ripe orchard fruit and flowers on the nose” that’s “medium-bodied with crunchy acidity and a zesty, slightly phenolic mid-palate.” This is an aromatic, food-friendly Sauvignon Blanc and a tremendous value.

John Anthony Vineyards was founded at the turn of the century with a clear vision: select ideal climates and vineyards, choose the best vine stock, work with the highest-caliber winemakers, and share the resulting wines with those who truly appreciate them. The wines are highly regarded, well-balanced, and built to cellar for years.

But the real story is John Anthony Truchard himself. He grew up making the four-hour drive from Reno to the family vineyard in Carneros every weekend in the back of a Chevy Blazer, biggest concern being whether he’d make it in time to watch “Dukes of Hazzard.” While his sisters and mother prepared the trailer, John worked alongside his father and brother preparing soils, irrigating, and tending vines.

When you grow up with Carneros soil under your fingernails, you meet some people. From a young age, John learned farming techniques from André Tchelistcheff, Mike Grgich, Joe Heitz, Larry Hyde, Dan Duckhorn, John Williams, Larry Turley, Herb Lamb – and of course his father Tony Truchard. That’s the kind of education you can’t buy.
