Davide Fregonese Barolo Prapo 2019

96 Points, James Suckling

The 2019 vintage was absolutely iconic in Barolo with near-perfect conditions that produced wines of remarkable depth and aging potential.

Prapò faces southeast with highly calcareous chalky marls that force the vines to struggle, resulting in thick-skinned grapes with massive tannin concentration. Suckling awarded 96 points, describing “potpourri and bitter oranges” with “firm, dusty yet ripe tannins” and “grace and power well managed.” This is the more structured, brooding expression – built to age 20-25 years or more.

Original price was: $95.00.Current price is: $87.00.

96 Points, James Suckling
Potpourri and bitter oranges dominate this complex wine. It’s bright ruby in the glass, with sweet spices and graceful depth. Firm on the palate with dusty yet ripe tannins, integrated delicate acidity and an amazing finish. Grace and power are well managed here. Long finish with rhubarb notes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

Davide Fregonese is a superstar in the making. You can ask anyone in Piedmont. He had a successful career in finance in Turin before pursuing his true passion: creating high-quality Italian wines. He named his winery Bugia Nen – Piedmontese dialect for “don’t cease ground” – symbolizing resilience and determination. And when two tiny 0.6-hectare plots came up for sale in Cerretta and Prapò, he jumped on them.

He’s lucky, he gets to make wines from two of the most prestigious vineyard sites in all of Barolo, and he works alongside his dear friend Davide Rosso (of Giovanni Rosso fame) to craft wines of immense depth and longevity.
