The estate of Domaine Gasnier is comprised of 25 hectares, all within the commune of Cravant-les-Coteaux. The Gasniers employ biodynamic techniques in farming, no pesticides or herbicides. The newly released 2019 is a beautiful bright and fruity wine, redolent of cedar and fresh red fruit. The wine is vinified in tank to maintain that pristine fruit.
In what was a miraculous 2019 vintage in France, Gasnier’s Chinon (Cabernet Franc) is sublime so much so that it caught the attention of the world’s most well-respected wine publication, Wine Advocate. For a $20 Loire Valley red, this one more than overdelivers. Turns out the Wine Advocate was equally mezmorized– and their glowing 91-point love paragraph (not even a review) doesn’t help me with already small allocations for one of my all-time favorite French Discovery plays.

91 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2019 Chinon Vieilles Vignes is a blend of two terroirs, the terrace between the river and the hillsides on siliceous clay topping the limestone subsoil and the hillside terrace on flinty clay over limestone. Vinified in small concrete vats and aged for six months in a 10-year-old barrel, the wine opens with an elegant and aromatic, floral bouquet of dark fruits intertwined with licorice aromas. Dense and intense on the silky-textured and vibrantly fresh palate, this is a pretty rich and generous but elegant Cabernet Franc with a rather smooth yet not sweet performance. The finish is long and tensioned and reveals remarkable energy and lingering salinity.

100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
