Here’s the real story – far too strange to be fiction. Vincent’s Father – like all the grape farmers of the small village of Thesee-La-Romaine, did as they had always done. They tried to get as much fruit as possible out of their vines to take down the village cooperative where all the grapes were sold by the kilo.
But young Vincent had a different idea. Having just returned home from a fresh stint at one of the top wineries of Chinon, Ricard knew two things. First – that the flint-rich soil had the potential to craft world-class Sauvignon Blanc and second – that the only way to do that was to drastically change the way they were farming.
So that first year Vincent took 10% of the vineyard – and as the old men of the village watched and laughed – Vincent went through the vines by hand, cutting vines and dropping fruit ($$$) right on to the ground. He bottled it under the family name in lieu of taking it down to the village cooperative. It was all fun and games until the wine was finally finished and the old men finally got to taste the wine.
It was clear that the wine was sublime and completely out of this world – easily competing with the wines of Sancerre. So the old men sprang to action and they sued Vincent for making wine ‘too good’ or out of type for the region.
Vincent’s a way better guy than I am. He eventually won his case and instead of running the other family’s out of business, he took over the village cooperative and taught the entire village how to grow for quality instead of quantity. This is easily one of the best white wine values in the world.

The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
The 2022 Hess Shirtail Ranches Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and clean, a vibrant SB that was fermented in 100% stainless steel to preserve its freshness and super-inviting aromatics. It combines fruit from a few of the best counties in California for growing Sauvignon Blanc. Utilizing fruit from the coastal Mendocino site with blocks more inland combines both grass and tropical notes, with ripe fruit but also a little salinity and more natural acidity. It’s a yin/yang combination that really meshes well.
The Bernard Reverdy Sancerre Blanc 2022 is tightly wound, opening slowly with a complex nose of citrus, chalk and white flowers. With air, higher tones emerge, with a great mingling of ripe fruit, and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused on the palate, with concise limestone-drive acidity, this is an elegant, lively, and energetic Sancerre that mirrors the warm vintage but also the old vines rooting deep in stony soils. What a great persistent finish filled with tension, this is a classic Sancerre that goes best with shellfish, freshly caught fish and or some goat cheeses.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
