Val di Suga Vigna Spuntali Brunello di Montalcino 2013

Spuntali vineyard sits on Montalcino’s coveted southwestern slope at nearly 1000 feet elevation, where sandy soils of marine origin meet Mediterranean climate. The 14-hectare site represents single-vineyard Brunello at its finest – the kind of terroir-driven expression that separates serious producers from the rest. It’s the combination of altitude, soil, and mature vines creating the perfect microclimate for Sangiovese to thrive, and thrive it does.

After 24 months in French oak and 36 additional months of bottle aging at the estate, this Brunello has reached that sweet spot where power meets refinement. Strong garnet color with ruby highlights opens to complex aromatics of black cherry, dried figs, and candied orange. The palate shows integrated tannins with remarkable length – exactly what you want from eleven-year-old Brunello with proper cellaring.

94 Points, Vinous
Good full red. Musky and mineral accents complicate the aromas of raspberry, flint and violet on the enticing nose. A step up in refinement and precision from Poggio al Granchio, with a thrilling silky texture to the tactile flavors of raspberry, red cherry, crushed stone and cinnamon. Wonderfully pure, boasting very fine tannins and lingering sweetness, this is a polar opposite of the rounder, richer, riper Poggio al Granchio.

94 Points, James Suckling
Plenty of spices and fresh herbs on the nose, such as dried rosemary and nutmeg, to match the underlying dried redcurrants and cranberries. Full-bodied with plenty of concentration, but still shows a very sturdy, tannin backbone and punchy acidity, to drive this through to a long finish. Drink in 2021.

Val di Suga is a pioneer in the production of the terroir-driven Brunello and the only producer making three single-vineyards in three different estates: Vigna del Lago in the North-East, Vinga Spuntali in the South-West and Pogigo al Granchio in the South-East.

The 2013 vintage in Montalcino delivered everything serious collectors want: classic structure, traditional elegance, and the kind of aging potential that turns good wine into great wine. This was the vintage that reminded everyone why Brunello commands such respect – a return to form after several hotter years that produced more immediately pleasing, yet less complex wines. Val di Suga, one of Tuscany’s most consistent producers, not only held onto their 2013s longer than most to give it an even more extensive aging process, but they also keep an incredible library, offering us unprecedented access to their greatest past treasures.
