92 Points, James Suckling

The 2022 vintage was hot and dry across Italy, but Val di Suga’s southwestern vineyards, blessed with cooling Mediterranean breezes, thrived in these conditions. Lower yields concentrated the flavors to extraordinary levels, with Vinous declaring these “some of the most seductive and pleasurable Rossos I’ve tasted in years.” The critic noted that serious producers are now crafting their Rossos as true “Baby Brunellos” – elegant, gorgeous Sangiovese without Brunello’s rigorous aging requirements.

The wine ages for 6 months in giant Slavonian oak barrels, preserving freshness while adding subtle complexity, followed by 3 months in bottle before its release. The results are spectacular – vibrant, energetic, and already showing beautifully.

“An excellent Rosso showing grapefruit, citrus, raspberries and touches of minerals and subtle white pepper. Juicy, transparent and well structured, with small grains of tannins.”

Val di Suga is an iconic producer in Montalcino that dates back to the 1960s. They are considered pioneers in the production of terrior-driven Brunello and have the incredibly fortunate distinction as being the only producer armed with three estate single-vineyards spread throughout the region: Vigna del Lago in the North-East, Vigna Spuntali in the South-West and Poggio al Granchio in the South-East.

While all their Brunello spends years aging before release, their Rosso showcases a brighter, more immediate expression of their terroir. The wine ages for 6 months in giant Slavonian oak barrels, preserving freshness while adding subtle complexity, followed by 3 months in bottle before its release. The results are spectacular – vibrant, energetic, and already showing beautifully.
