Turley Zinfandel Juvenile California 2023

92 Points, Wine Spectator – 90 Points, Vinous

This is always one of Turley’s absolute bread and butter wines that shows in the most effortless way that they are miles ahead of most of their competition. I mean they’re always some of the best Big Reds made, but this one even found itself inside the Top 20 last year in Wine Spectator’s Top 100. They loved this new rendition, calling it “a bold, juicy and super-expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years.” Big Red drinkers will love it.

Brimming with verve, offering fresh flavors and aromas of black cherry, raspberry, briar patch and savory pepper that end with snappy tannins. Drink now through 2033.

90 Points, Vinous
The 2023 Zinfandel Juvenile is bold, juicy and super-expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Bright red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and new leather build nicely in this tasty, mid-weight offering from Turley.

Despite the overwhelming number of Zinfandel producers in the U.S., the MVP of carrying the varietal’s reputation may very well belong to Larry Turley, who has spent the last thirty years in California dedicating his days to preserving and furthering Zinfandel’s cause. So much so that since the co-founder of Frog’s Leap Winery first left to start his own winery in 1993, he has built a portfolio that includes 47 wines across 50 vineyards with 29 of them dedicated to the Zin varietal!

Today, his protege, winemaker Tegan Passalacqua, (a noted Zinfandel and Petite Sirah specialist in his own regard), is the man tasked with overseeing the entire winemaking operation. On top of that, Tegan and his wife started their own brand, Sandlands concentrating on making lesser championed wines. Sound like a lot? You don’t even know. Wine Spectator pointed out that in the 2017 vintage alone, Tegan made 49 different wines from 13 different counties in California under the Turley label, and another dozen wines for Sandlands.

This is always one of Turley’s bread and butter wines that shows that they are miles ahead of most of the competition. Working with a certified organic, head-trained, dry-farmed field blend of super old vines planted in the heart of Napa Valley, it’s hard for Turley to go wrong. This latest Top 100 is another in a long line, but it’s a Top 15 placement for one of their baseline wines – an incredible achievement nonetheless.
