Recently, Oregon Winemaker Anne Sery has been on a tear with her Trousse Chemise brand. Landing top by-the-glass placements throughout NYC (Bar Boulud, Daniel, Chinese Tuxedo, Lure Fishbar, the Mandarin Oriental, Chef Carmellini’s The Dutch, Little Park, and the Westlight).
In a crazy 2020 vintage for a number of reasons, Anne was able to tap into some new fruit sources in Southern Oregon that bring juiciness and depth to her first ever, Rosé, a Rosé of Pinot Noir. It has a shimmering, brilliant pink color. It’s bright and energetic on the nose, displaying fresh wild strawberry and pink grapefruit scents. Dry and racy on the palate, it offers brisk red berry and citrus rind flavors with great lift and tension. The finish is long, with incredible food friendly acidity. This one will drink fast!

From the phenomenal 2018 vintage in Oregon, the Cumberland Reserve Pinot Noir from Bergstrom may be the highlight of his entire impressive fleet. Pretty much a labor of love, top lots are selected from some of the elite vineyards throughout the Willamette Valley – each tasted several a half dozen times in barrel before the final cut is made. The result is a complex collage of elegance and structure that can really best be described as Burgundian.

This is an exceptional premier cru offering from one of the most famous, most collected Burgundy producers. Clos des Porrets is a monopole, purchased by the Gouges family in 1933. Grégory claims it produces wine with the best potential of long aging within his range of wines. It has old vines rooted in pink limestone and rich clay, producing dynamite Nuits Saint Georges. Aromatically complex, with violets, black cherries and a touch of Burgundian earth. The fruit is pure, layers of dark cherries and plum that unfold in the glass with air. The tension is what you’d expect from one of the greats of Burgundy, wound-up and high-toned, the finish is mineral laded and goes on for minutes. This is truly extraordinary red Burgundy, an epic wine of power with finesse and just amazing potential.
The fresh off the boat 2020 Effet Papillon Rose is made 100% from Grenache (as many of the best Southern French Roses are). Pale salmon in color, it boasts aromas of bright red fruits, orange rinds and a hint of lemon zest. It’s incredibly smooth and dry, making it a great food wine– but this Rose is serious with depth and complexity, making it worthy of enjoying on its own.
For the first five years of Nicholas Wines, I always put out a 6-pack with some of the best wines that Melissa and I are enjoying at home. But last year, when all hell broke loose, I decided a case seemed more appropriate. Since we’re not out of the woods yet, I’m keeping it a case for this spring, but I have four new wines this year (3 btls each) that are sure to pair well with the sunshine and warm weather. Great on their own or with food, I’ve thrown in some wines you’ll know with some you might not.
