Jean Claude Janin formerly managed the Cave Co-op at Viré-Clessé but gave up his cushy position when he met a local girl, Marie-Odile, to farm the 4HA that belonged to her family. Over the next 20 years, the Janins have expanded their estate to 9HA but the jewel of the estate is the steep parcel of old vines next to the church in the sleepy village of Quintaine, first planted by the monks of Cluny, over 1000 years ago!
Like many of the great domaines of the Cote d’Or, the Janins concentrate on selling direct to private clients and Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe, their export list of clients is tiny and curated, we’re lucky to be on the list.
His brilliant Terroir de Quintaine, comes from a single parcel on a steep hillside of 75-year-old vines, laden with marine fossils and rarely makes it stateside. The entire production for their top wine, the 2022 Viré Clessé Terroir de Quintaine is just 400 cases.

Just 20 cases of this crazy small, rare and elite import managed to find their wine to America, and I scooped up five of them for Nicholas wines. This is a fabulous Cru Sancerre that showcases one of the finest vineyards in Sancerre from the lights-out 2019 vintage in the Loire Valley. It comes from Cul de Beaujeu, one of Chavignol’s most famous vineyards, with an incline of up to 60 degrees! It’s old-vine Sancerre grown on Kimmeridgian clay and limestone with all the vineyard work and harvesting done by hand. It truly represents the creme de la creme.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2021 version has a delightful energy in its youth, with a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
