91 Points, James Suckling
A firm and spicy red with a deep core of ripe fruit and a cedary aftertaste. It offers notes of ripe cherries, wild berries, dark chocolate, ground cloves and bark. Full, compact and pretty tight on the palate, with chewy tannins. A little bit austere at the end, but nicely filled with fruit. Drink now.
Tenuta Di Salviano Castello di Titignano Turlo Rosso IGT 2022
91 Points, James SucklingÂ
From the legendary family that brought you Sassicaia, comes a “Super Umbrian” blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The winemaking team is taking that same blue-chip Super Tuscan pedigree and applying it to Umbria. The Turlo vineyards sit on the hills of Lake Corbara’s northern bank at 500-800 feet above sea level, with soil rich in red clay, pebbles, and tufa (a limestone common in central Italy). The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented separately in small temperature-controlled steel tanks, and then a small portion is aged in French oak barriques before blending to add complexity. This is a beauty that is probably unlike any other wine you’ve tried before.

MORE INFO
In the 1990s, the Incisa della Rocchetta family, the legendary owners of Sassicaia, saw something special in Umbria that the wine world had somehow missed.
Nestled among Umbria’s rolling hills on the southern bank of Lake Corbara, the Salviano property offered the kind of exceptional terroir they’d built their reputation on in Tuscany. They bought the land, planted vines, and have been making wine there ever since. This is the Sassicaia family doing what they do best, just in a region where no one’s paying attention yet.
The story goes that it was the family matriarch, Donna Nerina Corsini (Giovanni Incisa’s mother) who noticed that part of the Salviano land was perfectly suited to red vines. She wanted to make a red wine that she could enjoy at home with family and friends. That became the start of Turlo, an unconventional blend from the territory of Lake Corbara. What started as a family wine has become one of Umbria’s most compelling reds.
