Tenuta di Fessina Erse Etna Bianco 2024

93 Points, James Suckling (Certified Organic)

The gorgeous 2024 Erse blend checked in at 90% Carricante with the rest coming from Catarratto Minnella, which is indigenous to Sicily. It’s got a beautiful straw-yellow hue with shades of green in the glass. Aromas flood out of the bottle: flashing fresh citrus, mountain herbs, lemon peel, almond, white flowers. For me, the real treat is the first sip. It’s a high-toned white with piercing minerality that dances on top of pure fruit, persistent herbaceous notes a small but mighty splash of saline through the finish.

This is always one of my favorite whites; there just isn’t anything out here that’s quite like it. It’s got the tension and electricity of Chablis… but from on top of an active volcano!

Complex, showing toasty minerality and citrus. On the nose, it shines with lemon tree and lemon paste. Medium-bodied, it has tension and vibrancy with a tight finish. A bit of candied fruit as well. Drink now.

Grown on a tiny organic six-hectare estate, at nearly 2,300 feet of elevation on an active volcano, the 70+ year old vines dig deep into the soil and given the turmoil underneath, they certainly deliver a bevy of interesting nuances that are found almost nowhere else in the wine world.

Part of what I think has so confused the critics is the volcanic minerality which is easily tasted and experienced – but doesn’t find easy parallels among obvious red wine comparisons like those described above. The best I can do is tell you it’s actually more akin to the mineral electric energy you find in a truly great Chablis – though you can taste a touch of the volcanic underpinnings.
