Tenuta di Arceno Valadorna Toscana IGT 2014

For anyone who stopped by the restaurant the other week and saw a group of people ‘hard at work’ tasting a selection of old wines, this one was the absolute star of that tasting. The 2013 Arcanum will get all the glory because of the big score and the better vintage, but I’m telling you this wine is absolutely fantastic – it’s drinking like a dream. Most people felt like this was the best wine of the tasting. For me, it was a toss-up with this and its sibling. It’s almost hard to believe that the same people who made the 2013 Arcanum also made this Valadorna. They’re totally different. This is a super Bordeaux Blend that leads with Tuscan Merlot, and is followed by Cabernet Franc and Cab Sauv. It’s just strikingly smooth, and so tasty with so many different layers, it’s the kind of wine that I’d even recommend sipping on its own without food. It’s just that impressive, and that rare to be drinking something like this from the 2014 vintage, in 2026!

91 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2014 Valadorna is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Other editions of this blend see Petit Verdot as well, but that late-ripening grape was omitted in this cool and soggy vintage that made it difficult for many varieties to reach full maturity. This wine is rich and meaty at its core with a pretty base of black fruit that is enhanced by spice, cola, cured meat and freshly tilled earth. The mouthfeel delivers medium intensity and richness and is more streamlined overall compared to the warm-vintage editions.

The Arceno estate is built atop one of Tuscany’s most ancient landscapes. It’s 1500-1700 feet above sea level just above the Chianti subregion of Castelnuovo Berardenga, and is the perfect place to make age-worthy reds. Under legendary winemaker Pierre Seillan, they divided the vineyards into 63 distinct “micro-crus” across complex soils of sandstone, basalt, and clay. An estate that was built for making earth-shattering, age-worthy cuvees.

While the Arcanum shows off the winery’s Cabernet Franc-dominant Super Tuscan, the Valadorna represents a Merlot-dominant blend that’s followed by Cabernet Franc and then Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s an ageworthy beauty as evident by this 2014 being otherwordly good in the year 2026.
