93 Points, Vinous

This is a gorgeous wine from two Argentinian home-grown superstars in Susana Balbo and Edy Del Popolo. Their work with Cabernet Sauvignon in Argentinian is unmatched and this new vintage captures lightning in a bottle.

Vinous nailed it perfectly: “elegant and focused” and “juicy and light on its feet, more infusion-driven than extracted” with “grip without aggression and balance without excess.” This is what happens when you prioritize finesse over power in a warm vintage like 2022.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon BenMarco from Gualtallary, Uco Valley features an elegant expression of black fruit and ash complemented by balsamic and mountain herb notes. Dry with fine tannins, it presents a compact and lean palate. This red showcases delicate, expressive fruit – definitely one to taste from Gulatallary.

The best wines from Argentina seem to have one thing in common: they’re the product of teamwork, not competition. Aruma is the family project with Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Nicolas Catena. El Enemigo combines the uber-talented Adrianna Catena with Alejandro Vigil. And BenMarco is Susana Balbo’s project with Edy Del Popolo.

Most people don’t know BenMarco is a Susana Balbo project – and that’s exactly how they want it. Argentina’s first female winemaker, the woman who has been quietly shaping Argentine wine for nearly four decades, lets her work do the talking. She tasked Edy Del Popolo, one of the country’s most respected viticulturists, to make Cabernet for her, and together they churn out elegance instead of over-extracted, over-the-top bottlings intended for the wow-factor crowd.
