#3 Highest Rated Oregon Pinot Noir of 2024 (James Suckling)

97 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, Decanter – 94 Pts, Wine Spectator – 94 pts, Wine Enthusiast

To my palate, the Pinot Noirs that Tony Soter makes off Mineral Springs Ranch in the Willamette Valley is always one of the very best representations of Oregon winemaking. It’s perennially scored towards the top of all Oregon Pinots, and offers such a wonderfully distinct and pure expression of whole cluster Pinot Noir. This is a magical vineyard and in my opinion the 2021 is quintessential age-worthy Oregon Pinot. This one has earth and spice to match sweet cherry and floral notes. It’s a beautiful Pinot in its youth that with time in the glass begins to unravel all kinds of intricate and more elegant notes.

97 Points, James Suckling
“Subtly spiced and deeply fruity, this wine has a great track record for improving with age. Rich in dark plums, black cherries, mint, cinnamon and pine accents. So layered and complex, mouth-filling but well balanced by moderate tannins and good acidity. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best from 2027.”

95 Points, Decanter
“The exposure that Mineral Springs has to the winds coming out of the Van Duzer Corridor hit the estate head-on and has a significant effect, cooling during hot times and providing warmth during colder times. It also dries out the air around vines, creating additional vine stress. This creates more skin tannin, barrel-aged for 12 months. Four months in tank allows the wine to move away from oxygen pungent earth and floral aromatics with a kiss of white pepper and mint to lift. An ample structure sets the frame for red fruit and savoury spices. 40-50% whole cluster year in and year out on average.”

94 Points, Wine Spectator
“Detailed and finely focused, this refined red offers expressive raspberry and guava flavors laced with mineral, forest floor and black tea tones as this builds tension and richness toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
“This elegant expression of the Willamette Valley’s strong 2021 vintage leads with aromas of blackberries, ginger scones and a bit of Tahitian vanilla. Tart cranberry and orange-zest flavors are soon joined by notes of cedar and cacao nibs. The wine’s silky tannins and crisp acidity are equally matched. Enjoy now until 2035.

Eventually in the late 1980’s his curiosity of Oregon’s buzzing winemaking drew him away from his cushy California lifestyle making some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in the world and opted instead to try his hand in Oregon’s wild, wild, west with the help of his scientist wife, Michelle.

Michelle is an expert in environmentalism, organics, biodynamics and nutrition, which has made Mineral Springs Ranch a special destination in the Pacific Northwest. After years of diligence, Tony and Michelle accomplished their ultimate goal in 2013: converting their 250-acre property into a certified biodynamic farm and haven for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
