San Polo Brunello di Montalcino 2020

94 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 93 Points, Wine Spectator

San Polo is one of Tuscany’s most consistent producers, known for their age-worthy, dark-fruited Brunello di Montalcino bottlings. Their 2020 iteration is no different, in fact, it’s the perfect example of why this estate continues to lead. Wine Enthusiast called out “Savory, umami aromas of underbrush, damp earth and sage, like a forest stroll in late fall.” Suckling focused on the “Plenty of red fruit with cherry and orange-peel character.” This is the ideal place for making organic, expressive, high-quality Sangiovese. Not many people do it better than San Polo. There’s a lot to like here, but this will really be at its best in another 5-10 years. A beauty for the cellar…

94 Points, James Suckling
Plenty of red fruit with cherry and orange-peel character on both the nose and palate. It’s medium-bodied with a round texture and ripe-berry character. Juicy and velvety textured. Just a hint of white pepper and spice at the end. Very drinkable now, but better in two or three years. Try after 2027.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Savory, umami aromas of underbrush, damp earth and sage, like a forest stroll in late fall, with black cherries and plums on the nose. The palate pivots to sweet ripe cherries, strawberries and raspberries, with orange zest, salt and pepper adding nuance, before a hot, fiercely acidic finish. Lots of verve.

93 Points, Wine Spectator
A bright red, with raspberry, strawberry and rose flavors, this is delicate yet not fragile. Vibrant acidity and a firm line of tannins emerge on the finish, where this picks up vegetal, earth and mineral elements. Best from 2026 through 2040.

San Polo is one of those Tuscan estates that looks like it should be on a postcard. It’s replete with rolling hills, picturesque olive groves, a lovely, old-school Italian farmhouse, and a state-of-the-art underground winery. This property is as much a wine museum these days as it is a winery known for its exceptional Reds.

This is the ideal place for making meaningful, high-quality Sangiovese, and San Polo is known for being as good as anybody in Tuscany. Under the watchful eye of  the “dynamic and lovely First Lady of Italian Wine”, this gorgeous, sprawling estate is in exceptional hands and the quality continues to improve.
