San Felice Chianti Classico 2023

San Felice hired Bordeaux superstar oenologist Thomas Duclos (Château Canon, Château Troplong Mondot, Franc Mayne, Beau-Séjour Bécot, and Château Giscours) as a consultant in 2025. To say that’s been a game-changer could be an understatement for a winery that was already white-hot to begin with. Vinous noted: “San Felice is in the middle of a serious turnaround that has yielded impressive results so far. The bombastic style of the past has been abandoned in favor of wines that offer much more energy and vibrancy.”

You have to respect that a beloved winery that has been such a fixture in Tuscany since the 1800s—a massive, sprawling estate with the perfect combination of soil and micro-climate, is still looking to improve each and every vintage. With this latest rendition, they’ve completely knocked it out of the park.

90 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The San Felice 2023 Chianti Classico is mostly Sangiovese with complementary grapes. It shows clean and punchy fruit with raspberry and wild cherry at the top. This is an easy wine to drink, and you could even serve it a few degrees cooler on a warm summer evening. Although this vintage is thinner than most, the wine is executed in a simple but very approachable style.

I remember it as if it were yesterday, even though it’s been a few years now. One of our usual go-to’s San Felice, saw their Chianti Classico announced as Wine Spectator’s #24 Wine of 2022 out of nearly 20,000 wines. We sent an email out as soon as the news broke and ended up selling two full pallets—112 cases—more than any other single retailer on the East Coast.

That’s the day that everything changed for San Felice and us. The day the Nicholas Wines collective buying power earned us a new friend in Chianti, and one who has given us preferential treatment ever since.
