This is a very cool wine from a very, special place. Cialla is a monopole appellation, a recognized sub-zone of Collio Orientali del Friuli where Ronchi di Cialla is the one and only producer.
The estate is run by brothers: Ivan and Pierpaolo. They’re both entomologists by trade, who specialize in biodiversity. That’s part of the secret to making these magical wines: you need the land to cooperate each vintage.
Half of the grapes here are late harvested at the end of October, normally with noble rot, and the other half are harvested even later at which point the grapes have dried slightly on the vine in the vineyard. Spontaneous fermentation of the must in French oak barrels.
