Ronchi di Cialia Picolit 2015 (500ml Bottle)

Picolit is essentially the result of a biological “glitch” known as floral abortion. During pollination, the majority of the flowers fail to develop, leaving behind sparse bunches with just a few tiny, hyper-concentrated berries. This natural scarcity is why it’s considered one of Italy’s most elusive liquid treasures—it isn’t rare because of marketing, but because the vine itself is incredibly stingy with its yields. The 2015 vintage was a particular good vintage for this wine. With a little age to it now, it delivers a shy, but gorgeous expression with an ethereal texture.

This is a very cool wine from a very, special place. Cialla is a monopole appellation, a recognized sub-zone of Collio Orientali del Friuli where Ronchi di Cialla is the one and only producer.

The estate is run by brothers: Ivan and Pierpaolo. They’re both entomologists by trade, who specialize in biodiversity. That’s part of the secret to making these magical wines: you need the land to cooperate each vintage.

Half of the grapes here are late harvested at the end of October, normally with noble rot, and the other half are harvested even later at which point the grapes have dried slightly on the vine in the vineyard. Spontaneous fermentation of the must in French oak barrels.
