Renato Ratti created modern Barolo. In 1965, he bottled the first single-vineyard Barolo from this very Marcenasco site, revolutionizing an entire region that had only made blends. These days, his son Pietro has taken over the reins from his father and has only further cemented his family legacy through some of the most insane single-vineyard Baroli bottlings. His 2021 ‘Marcenasco’ is a show-stopper, a 97-point, dark-fruited, layered bombshell that is still so young but already promises such an incredible future of drinking. Located halfway up the hill dominating the principal valley of Barolo, buttressed by steep slopes lined by orderly vineyards, lies a precious jewel from the 15th century: the Abbey of Annunziata.
