Redbreast has been at it over a century in Ireland, making whiskey in the Irish Pot Still tradition. When you think single pot, Redbreast is usually what you’re talking about. Routinely a Gold medal winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Redbreast represents some of the finest expression of Irish whiskey.
The 21-year old iteration is quintessential small-batch Irish Whiskey that has the richness and depth that you look for, but with levels of flavor and class that go above and beyond. It’s creamy and smooth with mangos, peaches and apricot notes that seamlessly mix together, bursting out of the bottle. On the mouth, the creaminess and silky mouthfeel that finishes incredibly long and with the slightest hint of spice at the very end.

For my money, this might be both the best Whiskey under $50 and the most criminally under-priced Whiskey (not that I’m complaining). Whiskey Advocate has named this one to their 7 best under $60/bottlings, but as you can see this checks in way below. This small batch bourbon is made from barrels picked by father and son master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell. It’s as smooth as can be and jampacked with notes of caramel, vanilla, rye spice and burnt orange peel. Bottled at 90 Proof, this one leaves a nice, warm Kentucky hug that lingers nicely on the back palate.
I once again found myself with one of the more and limited bottlings from the good people at Michter’s It comes in a round 111 Proof and is a monster from one of the best distilleries out there. This bottling is usually between 107 and 112 Proof but isn’t made every year (only in the good years). It’s oozing with seductive aromas of Cinnamon, rye spice, chocolate and freshly baked gingerbread. Cinnamon, dark chocolate, a hint of Cayenne pepper mixed with charred sugar and oak explode out of the bottle and greet you head on. I wish I had more than six of these beauties to pass out. Such is life.
This is a very rare beauty and one of the few private barrels that Jefferson’s does at 100 Proof. It leads with sweet aroma of warm panatone. Then the sweet delectable taste of fruit and honey. A warm burning at the end. And the flavor of this nectar stays on your taste buds more than a couple of minutes. Best consumed relaxing and enjoying on a chilly winter day.
I have one of High West’s newest and rarest releases, a limited roll out of Campfire Whiskey – a blend that they make using some of the finest scotch, bourbon and rye whiskey barrels they can get. This is a pretty complex blend and it gets increasingly better and more interesting with every return to the glass and new dimension unlocked. This one checks in at 92 Proof (46% alc.) and has a ton of different caramel, oak, light smoke, leather, dried fruit and zesty spices that send your taste buds on a straight up rollercoaster ride. Unfortunately, I have only a few bottles to go round – not enough for an offer of any kind.
