Quilceda Creek CVR Reserve Red 2023

97 Points, James Suckling – 96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – 95 Points, Vinous

Quilceda Creek is in a league of their own in Washington wine. The winery has now received 46 perfect 100-point scores across wine publications and is the undisputed crown jewel of the state. With an unprecedented track record including four top-10 wines of the year in Wine Spectator, they’ve achieved what no other winery outside California has done. And now they’re doing something “most wineries wouldn’t be willing to do”—offering their gorgeous 2023 CVR Reserve at half the price it deserves.

This gorgeous Bordeaux Blend is made up of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon – far more than the 75% needed to label it as such—and yet they call it “CVR Reserve” instead of Cabernet, making it substantially more affordable without sacrificing an ounce of quality. James Suckling gave it 97 points, calling it “Wonderful…Fresh and juicy mid-palate with flavors of blood oranges and cherries. Very approachable and refined.” Jeb Dunnuck came in at 96 points, calling it “an incredible value for the quality.” Vinous addly simply “Gorgeous.”

Original price was: $145.00.Current price is: $125.00.

Wonderful, perfectly ripened red fruit and dusty roses on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins. Fresh and juicy mid-palate with flavors of blood oranges and cherries. Very approachable and refined. Drink or hold.

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
An incredible value for the quality, something not all producers at this level would be willing to do, the 2023 CVR Red Wine is a beautiful, full-bodied wine that overdelivers on its price point. Silky smooth tannins coat red fruit, making for a supple, exceptionally integrated, generous wine that shines a light on the exceptional grapes at play this vintage. Blending 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot (more than usual as the producer did not make a varietal Merlot this time), and 3% Petit Verdot from younger vines, it’s in the exceptional years like this one, both bountiful and of highest quality, that a wine like this is worth every penny.

“Quilceda Creek sets the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon in Washington, and this is a clear example of why they have earned that reputation.”

Three years now removed from their 40th anniversary, Quilceda Creek continues to enjoy some incredible press and has separated itself from the rest of the pack in Washington state and beyond.. No other American winery has enjoyed the success they’ve been able to achieve. They’re the first winery outside of California to earn 100 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and have done so on seven different occasions from that publication alone(!), with a handful of other wine writers and expert reviewers offering up perfect scores as well.

In fact, there really is no feat that they haven’t achieved. Easily considered the best winery in the state (and dubbed so by Parker’s Wine Advocate), they have made three Top 10 appearances on Wine Spectator’s Annual Top 100 list and they even had their Cabernet poured at the White House in a dinner with then President Obama and President at Hu Jintao of China in 2011.
