Poggio al Tesoro ‘Il Seggio’ Rosso Bolgheri 2021

95 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 93 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

This wine is a SuperTuscan supernova that is quickly becoming one of the best values in all of Tuscany. It’s got everything you are looking for and at a price tag that’s far more affordable than some of its biggest competition. All four of the big reviewers came in with high scores for the 2021 bottling.

In what was a hot year, the winery made a very wise decision to leave out Sangiovese and just focus on Bordeaux varietals for this blend. The Cabernet here is tremendous, setting the foundation for this vibrant dark fruited wine that can be enjoyed at any point over the next 25 years, and I can guarantee it will be excellent. These are rising stars, and with unanimous hits like this ‘Il Seggio’, it’s no surprise.

Original price was: $50.00.Current price is: $45.00.

95 Points, James Suckling
A very focused red with blackcurrants, hints of dark tobacco and bark. Orange peel. Medium to full body. Juicy and layered with a freshness and finesse. Lovely length. Drink now or hold.

94 Points, Wine Spectator
Bright and saturated, with black currant, black cherry, cedar and tobacco flavors, this red also leans toward the elegant side. A firmly built version, showing fine equilibrium and refined tannins on the extended finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

93 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The entry-level Poggio al Tesoro 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio opens to a dark, inky appearance and aromas that recall slate, pencil shaving, curry leaf, sweet blackberry and purple fruit. The blend is 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine is broad and rich with soft intensity. You’ll want to drink it now with veal steaks.

93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
A saturated red/purple color, the 2021 Il Seggio is 50% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot 10%. Named after the Seggio River, it’s lush and inviting with aromas of fresh black plums, wet asphalt, wildflowers, and sweet Mediterranean herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with ripe tannins, its graphite notes come to the fore, with a persistent mineral-toned texture and notes of black tea leaf on the finish. Though its aromas are quite appealing and initially inviting, a more serious wine emerges as it unfolds in the glass and is deserving of cellaring. Drink 2025-2040.

Even if you’re unfamiliar with Poggio al Tesoro, the Allegrini family behind it likely rings a bell. They’re one of Italy’s most respected and accomplished winemaking families. Their commitment to sustainability shines through in their gorgeous, sprawling estate, which they manage organically and utilize composting practices.

Poggio al Tesoro sits in the heart of Tuscany’s famed Bolgheri region, home to legendary Super Tuscan names like Ornellaia, Le Macchiole, Tenuta San Guido, and Grattamacco. With such prestigious neighbors, prices in this region typically soar above $100 a bottle. That’s what makes this one such a rare find.

While you might not directly taste the sea in this wine, its proximity to the Mediterranean undeniably plays a role. The wine bursts with freshness and personality, characteristics likely influenced by the coastal influence.
