Podere Montale Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG 2020

94 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast

This comes from a clutter of vineyards that span 1,800 to 2,400 feet above sea level, with volcanic soils that give off a signature mineral salinity and sharp, clean acidity to each grape grown here. The 2020 Montecucco Sangiovese is a particular standout, earning double 94-point scores from both Wine Enthusiast and James Suckling. Wine Enthusiast described “sturdy tannins that hold their own against acid, which is quiet at first, then roars up.” In other words, this is a sleeping beauty. Once it gets some time in the glass and a little air, it starts to flaunt its true range of aromas and flavors. This is a rising star in Tuscany – mark my words.

94 Points, James Suckling
Ripe red berries and blood oranges with some savory spice on the nose. Medium-bodied, juicy and vibrant with attractive bitter-spice character and fresh acidity. Easy to enjoy. Drink or hold.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The nose sparks with aromas of tart blackberry, blood orange, tea leaf, and pepper. The palate opens with more of those tangy blackberry and tea leaf notes, but undertones of vanilla and milk chocolate add sweetness for balance. Sturdy tannins hold their own against acid, which is quiet at first, then roars up.

Podere Montale is a young and highly ambitious estate founded by Silvio Mendini, ideally located in Seggiano about 1,800 to 2,400 feet above sea level, with volcanic soils that give off a signature mineral salinity and sharp, clean acidity to each grape grown here. Of their sprawling 220-hectare property, only 16 to 20 hectares are planted to vine. The rest is ancient woodland with centuries-old olive trees. These guys are farming with serious conviction and real respect for the land, and the results have paid off big time.
