Petrolo Torrione Toscana 2022

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, James Suckling

The Torrione (primarily Sangiovese with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) represents an extraordinary value in the world of Super Tuscans. While Petrolo’s top cuvée, Galatrona (what Wine Spectator called the “Le Pin of Tuscany”), commands prices well north of $100, the Torrione delivers nearly the same quality, without all the Merlot and at a fraction of the price.

The 2022 Petrolo Torrione is dark ruby in color with extravagant aromas of strawberry preserves and sweet herbs. The palate offers a silken mix of crushed red fruits, black cherry jam and sweet tobacco, all framed by fine, slightly dusty Tuscan tannins. It’s at once powerful and elegant – a wine that showcases why Petrolo has become one of the most critically decorated estates in Tuscany over the past decade.

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $33.00.

This wine is mostly Sangiovese with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Petrolo 2022 Torrione reveals a luminous ruby tinge and follows through with bold cherry, blackcurrant and crushed rose. This vintage brings forth more textural heft in terms of mouthfeel, and it feels a little richer on the finish. You get excellent quality at a still-affordable price.

A very successful 2022 with a beautiful texture of ripe tannins plus cherry, chocolate and berry character. Full-bodied and with a silky texture. Outstanding harmony and balance. Drink now.

Some Tuscan estates seem to fly under the radar despite making wines that outperform their more famous neighbors. Petrolo is exactly that kind of hidden gem – a producer that insiders know delivers extraordinary quality that often surpasses Super Tuscans costing twice or three times as much.

Located in the Valdarno Superiore, Petrolo sits in the center of a triangle formed by Florence to the north, Siena to the southwest, and Arezzo to the southeast. While there are few notable estates in this immediate neighborhood, once you begin climbing the property’s undulating hills, you quickly understand what makes this place so special.

These guys are making some of the very best under $50/bottle Super Tuscans all the way up to what has been described as the ‘Le Pin of Tuscany’ for their flagship bottling. If you don’t know Petrolo, it’s time to make a change ASAP!
