The 2022 ‘Le Volte’ is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and Petit Verdot, and it undergoes the same meticulous vinification as its big brother. The different varietals are fermented separately in small steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages for 10 months, partly in barriques previously used for the flagship Ornellaia and partly in concrete tanks – a perfect balance between tannic structure and fresh fruit expression.

93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
The nose is fresh and balanced, with aromas of Bing cherries, wild strawberries, fresh coffee and No. 2 pencil. The palate stays balanced, with more cherries, strawberries and coffee, as well as denser notes of soil and dark chocolate, plus a compelling interplay between chalky tannins and electric acidity.
93 Points, James Suckling
Very aromatic, with raspberry, orange peel and floral aromas. Nice transparency. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp, crunchy finish.

92 Points, Wine Advocate
“This is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. In this hot vintage, the Merlot was slightly reduced. The Ornellaia 2022 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia remains a plush and accessible Tuscan red. Harvest time saw lower yields on average, with smaller berries and greater fruit concentration. This wine matures in used oak passed down from the top-shelf wines. There is blackberry and dark cherry with sweet spice.”

92 Points, Wine Spectator
A fresh, expressive red, this also exhibits tension, lending energy to its black currant, cherry, licorice and cedar flavors. Graphite and salty accents add detail on the long, tightly wound finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2033.

When one of Italy’s most prestigious estates creates an entry-level wine, most would expect a simple, approachable bottle that merely hints at the flagship’s greatness. Ornellaia had different ideas. With the 2022 Le Volte, they’ve crafted something that’s far more than just a “second wine” – it’s a legitimate standout that has critics raving.

The praise has been unanimous: 93 points from Wine Enthusiast, 93 points from James Suckling, 92 points from Wine Spectator, and now 92 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Four major publications all fawned over this wine’s exceptional quality and value.

The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was challenging but ultimately rewarding. After a typical winter and cool spring, the region experienced a 75-day dry spell that seriously stressed the vines. This naturally limited yields but concentrated flavors in the small berries that remained. September brought perfect ripening conditions with cool nights that helped develop the wine’s complex aromatics and structured tannins. Due to that summer heat, this one has more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than usual, giving it that extra ‘supercharge’ people will love.
