Nickel & Nickel Fog Break Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

95 Points, Decanter – 95 Points, James Suckling

The shallow, iron-rich volcanic soils here from the famous Atlas Peak lend the wine its signature minerality and structure. This is terroir-driven Cabernet from one of the most distinctive sites in Napa – the kind of single-vineyard bottling that serious collectors seek out. Nickel & Nickel has built its reputation on showcasing exceptional individual vineyards, and Fog Break is among their finest.

The 2022 vintage earned 95 points from James Suckling, who describes “great power and depth” with “vivid dark-fruit flavors” that come together in an “opulent, intense and polished wine.”

95 Points, Decanter
Compact and full-bodied, with intense, chewy tannins that balance muscular power with freshness. Leans toward the dark-fruited profile reminiscent of the 2019 vintage, combined with the vibrant acid tension of 2022. The grapes were mostly harvested before the heatwave, ensuring ripeness balanced by an excellent core of juicy, firm acidity. A finely tuned, powerful Cabernet that captures depth and vibrancy in equal measure. Aged for 20 months in 55% new French oak.

95 Points, James Suckling
Great power and depth come together with vivid dark-fruit flavors in this opulent, intense and polished wine. Delicious black cherries, dried blueberries, spearmint and creme de cassis on the palate, soothed by a velvety texture of massive but fine-grained tannins.

Far Niente has launched themselves into stardom worldwide by consistently making some of the best and most exciting Cabernets. I would argue that where they took it up a few notches in quality and stature is when they committed mass amounts of resources and energy into their Nickel & Nickel Single Vineyard bottlings. They are some of the best expressions of Oakville and Yountville single-vineyard Cabernet produced most years, and in Napa Valley’s 2022 vintage – it’s not surprising that these wines yet again remain a cut above most of their competition.

Fog Break Vineyard sits above the fog line on the rugged slopes of Atlas Peak, one of Napa Valley’s most coveted AVAs. While the valley floor is blanketed in morning fog, this vineyard is already bathed in sunlight, retaining warmth throughout the day for optimal ripeness. It’s a privileged site – sheltered from valley breezes, benefiting from early morning sun and consistent warmth that enhances fruit concentration and complexity.
