I source coffee even more rigorously than I do wines. There are hundreds of wines I pick out each year for the Nicholas Wines faithful, but so far, this is only the fourth roast that I’ve felt comfortable putting my name on the bag. This coffee is so good, and the manual work that goes into this hard-effort venture including all the hand-picking along rugged volcanic terrain is part of the premium that goes into it.
Hawaiian Kona coffee is beloved on the international scale in part because it’s so rare and comes from such a tiny area. The total distance of the Kona Coffee belt on the Big Island is super tiny – we’re talking about a narrow strip of land that’s only about 30 miles long and runs anywhere between 1,000 and 2,500 feet above sea level. With abundant sunshine in the morning and plenty of PM showers mixed with the rich volcanic soil keep nutrients packed in, creating the perfect environment to grow very special beans.
