Mohua is less than 15 years old, but has quickly proven themselves to be one of New Zealand’s most exciting producers. Armed with a number of generational winemakers, they work exclusively in NZ’s top two regions, making their Sauv Blanc in Marlborough and Pinot Noir in Central Otago. Amazingly, Mohua has never had a vintage where their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has failed to register a 90-point score.
That streak certainly wasn’t broken in 2021, inversely, they actually received one of their highest scores to date, a 92-point review from Europe’s most famous and stingiest wine reviewers, Decanter who deemed their wine “classically styled” with a “finely rounded texture”.
This is what I mean by consistency.

92 Points, Decanter
“Focused nose of pink grapefruit with notes of lemon and lay- ers of flowers and fresh herbs. Classically styled, finely rounded texture.”
The Lauverjat Pouilly Fume 2021 was born just across the Loire River from Sancerre, where the soil is rich with river deposits, Portlandian limestone, and Kimmerdigian limestone. It really is the triple threat of soil, and this flint influence gives the wine incredible depth and beauty. It was entered in the Gilbert & Gaillard International Wine Tasting, where it won the gold medal and was called “a multi-award winning Pouilly-Fume made from old-vines” in a review that ended with a simple declaration: “As good as it gets.”
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.

The Hahn SLH Chardonnay 2019 is gorgeous double 90-point wine that benefits from ocean breezes from Monterey Bay, and a fog that burns off extreme later in the day. This single-vineyard expression allows for the grapes to reach maximize ripeness with great natural acidity and balance, making for an vibrant, high-toned Chardonnay that totally sings with or without food.
A Nicholas Wines favorite every vintage and the perennial by-the-glass Sancerre at Gramercy Tavern and Danny Meyer’s other Union Square hot spots, this is always a fantastic bottle of Sancerre. Super intense aromatics with crisp stone fruits, Asian pear and that signature Bué minerality streak. Vibrant fruit and acidity with tremendous balance and depth. The perfect pair for seafood, and a wine that you can enjoy now and over the next 5-7 years.
