“Kistler Vineyards remains one of the absolute benchmark producers of great Sonoma Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sitting right up there with the highest quality examples of these grapes from throughout the world. While the wines come from as wide a range of top terroirs as Sonoma can provide, interestingly nearly all of the Chardonnays are produced from a proprietary selection of Wente clones taken from a Larry Hyde block in the early 1980s.”
– Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Les Noisetiers, surrounds the Kistler winery on the Sonoma Coast. Steve’s brand new 2021 release just came out and it seems to be one of his best to date. I guess that shouldn’t come as a surprise since 2021 was a very special vintage throughout California and especially Sonoma Coast.
This one comes bristling with energy, nuance, juicy fruit and a mouthwatering mineral backbone. As always with these wines, it’s expertly made with tremendous balance and tension. Flavors of lemon, honeysuckle and stone fruit aromatics lead to a full bodied, juicy core that is just loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear with great acidity and mineral backbone to bring it all together.
It’s another world class chardonnay from an icon in American winemaking, Steve Kistler.

Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
The 2022 Hess Shirtail Ranches Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and clean, a vibrant SB that was fermented in 100% stainless steel to preserve its freshness and super-inviting aromatics. It combines fruit from a few of the best counties in California for growing Sauvignon Blanc. Utilizing fruit from the coastal Mendocino site with blocks more inland combines both grass and tropical notes, with ripe fruit but also a little salinity and more natural acidity. It’s a yin/yang combination that really meshes well.
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2021 version has a delightful energy in its youth, with a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
Jean-Claude Janin’s Domaine des Terres de Chatenay estate has 7 hectares of naturally farmed, old-vine Chardonnay with his vines rooted in some of the most mineral soil in all of Burgundy. The resulting wines are electric renditions of white Burgundy, with high-toned, floral aromatics, a deep concentration of green apple and pear fruit and a laser-like finish that is stony, a touch saline and a mile long. The 2022 is an extra notable year – despite a lower than normal yield, the quality across the board in Burgundy is exceptional.
