A chewy, structured red with blackberry, chocolate and some walnut and bark. It’s full-bodied and solid with lots of fruit and tannins. Second wine of Calon Segur. Needs five or six years to soften. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a terrific second wine. Ample, bold and dramatic, the 2019 packs a huge punch. Black cherry, plum, new leather, graphite and incense build as this flamboyant, opulent Saint-Estèphe shows off its considerable allure. The 2019 is a big wine, but the 15.1% alcohol is not especially evident.
The Marquis de Ségur, known as the “Prince of Vines,” owned the estate in the 18th century alongside First Growths Château Lafite and Château Latour. His legendary quote, “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon Ségur,” cemented the estate’s status and is commemorated by the heart design found on the label.
Le Marquis de Calon Ségur, the second label wine, offers an earlier-drinking, Merlot-dominant expression of the Saint-Estèphe terroir, distinct from the main Grand Vin. This second wine is consistently super highly rated by critics, often earning scores that rival or outpoint other classified growths. That’s just a testament to the overall quality and investment in winemaking across the entire Calon Ségur property.
