It’s good to be a part of the Maker’s Mark Private Selection Single Barrel Program. Anybody who gets their hands on this one will surely know why. The small-batch distillery in Loretto, Kentucky has made a name for themselves with their unique look and taste, but their Cask Strength program is where they really set themselves apart.
Selecting a barrel of Makers Mark is different from any other single barrel. With Makers you get to blend your own barrel using different different wood staves of varying levels of char & wood. It’s an absolutely crazy process that for us took hours & about 30 different blends. I can’t think of a selection that is more reliant on the buyer trusting the source that it’s coming from.
In blending these barrels, there are 1001 possible combinations. For mine, I used 3 baked American pure, 2 seared French Cuvée, 2 Maker’s 46, 3 roasted French Mocha staves. It was bottled at 112.1 proof in December of 2020. For me, this is hands down the best Maker’s Mark that I’ve ever tasted.
Stave Profile:
Baked American Pure: 3
Seared French Cuvee: 2
Maker’s Mark 46: 2
Roasted French Mocha: 3
Toasted French Spice: 0
Fragrant notes of toffee, caramel apple and coffee. Despite being high alc., it’s crazy smooth and seductive with vanilla and caramel notes and a creamy finish that delivers a super enjoyable slow burn.

100 Point Wine Enthusiast: Among all other distilled spirits, vodka stands alone – it is the cleanest tasting, most versatile choice for sipping neat, on the rocks or in a ZYR Vodka Martini. The ZYR recipe is velvety smooth with a clean, fresh and slightly sweet finish. Like many of the world’s other closely guarded formulas, ZYR is the result of select ingredients, recipe, process, controls and tradition. Because of ZYR’s proprietary 9-5-3 formula and the highest criteria for only the best raw ingredients, vodka has never tasted so clean or so smooth.

Anyone lucky enough to get their hands on one of these bottles can attest, they’re truly some of the best Cabernets produced anywhere in the world. Last year I got 30 bottles. This year I only got 12 of their ridiculously allocated 2019 Cabernet which unsurprisingly was showered with a perfect 100-point review yet again. It’s worth reading all the reviews for something like this because it’s really a special bottling from a Cult producer that is a rare treat for us to have.
This is the very first of its kind – a Reposado Rosa Single Barrel. Código has been working on a “Reposado Rosa” tequila project for the King of Country and wanted to age their juice in some crazy expensive wine barrels. Might as well get em from one of Napa’s very best. I can’t tell you the winery because they asked me not to but I can tell you that their bottles are on our wine list for north of $1,000 each. I managed to snag exactly one barrel away from the Hall of Famer- the only person who gets this exclusive Reposado. Super smooth with hints of vanilla, caramel, citrus & grilled pineapple. I’m the only one in the country who has this. Released just in time for Valentine’s Day – where a bottle of delicious pink Tequila with a bouquet of flowers sounds like a pretty great gift.
The 2019 Composition Chardonnay is stunningly complex. The nose is an impressive balance of floral notes, bright citrus, and pome fruits – a little bit rose laced into fresh, ripe pear. The location of the two parcels adds to the flavor dynamics. One block faces east towards Mt Hood and basks in the early sunlight; necessary for an extended growing season and complete maturity. The second, the North Block sits much higher in elevation upon a thin layer of soil and contributes delightful acidity. With those elements combined, the wine is stunning and unlike anything I’ve really laid my hands on from Oregon.
