93 Points, James Suckling
This combines the creamy-oily side of white Burgundy with succulent candied pineapple
and lychee fruit plus touches of almonds and smoke. The interplay of the ripeness and
vitality is delightful and impressive. Long, quite compact finish with excellent mineral
freshness. Drink or hold.
Louis Latour Montagny La Grande Roche Premier Cru 2022
93 Points, James Suckling
Montagny is a 100% Chardonnay appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise where, thanks to a 1990s quality upgrade, roughly two-thirds of all vineyards are officially designated Premier Cru. You’re essentially paying for high-tier classified fruit at regional prices. “La Grande Roche” vineyard sits high up on the hillsides with perfect limestone bedrock and admirably oriented slopes, catching plenty of sunshine that aids in a great concentration of flavors.
James Suckling came in at 93 points and was even moved to pen a much longer review than normal, writing: “This combines the creamy-oily side of white Burgundy with succulent candied pineapple and lychee fruit plus touches of almonds and smoke. The interplay of the ripeness and vitality is delightful and impressive. Long, quite compact finish with excellent mineral freshness.” You’re going Meursault-type quality here at a fraction of the price. This is a gem that is not to be missed!

MORE INFO
Back in March, I was up in the city meeting my old buddy Bernard Retornaz, the longtime President of Louis Latour. Bernard recently retired, but can’t stay away, and together we went to a Latour tasting where he introduced me to all their top guys. What started with a conversation about our favorite Burgundy vintages has blossomed into quite the partnership. Recently, we’ve unlocked unprecedented access to Latour’s vast and unbeatable portfolio.
This is one that I’ve been negotiating behind the scenes, just waiting for the right deal to materialize. Finally, we have one of Burgundy’s best-kept secrets at an incredible price.
Latour’s Montagny Premier Cru is arguably white Burgundy’s best-kept secret, offering a brilliant combination of site-driven terroir, elegance, and affordability. It consistently delivers a Meursault- or Puligny-like experience at a fraction of the cost, and this 2022 La Grande Roche earned 93 points from James Suckling to prove it.
