There are a lot of big names, regions, and styles to explore when you collect wine but nothing…nothing really compares to a great Gevrey-Chambertin. They’re the ultimate iron fist in the velvet glove: all the nuance of flavor you might expect from a great Pinot with strength, power, and focus found almost nowhere else.
But unfortunately, precious little is made and so each year, I’m forced to quietly sneak out my 24-36 bottle allocation of one of my absolute favorites to a tiny subset of Nicholas fans.
When it comes to G-C, you can’t do any better than Louis Boillot. Clement Boillot, Louis’ son, will eventually have the most impressive real estate collection in all of Burgundy. His mother, Ghislaine, owns many of the most sought-after vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny – some with vines nearly 100 years old. His father has parcels in nearly a dozen communes, stretched all the way from the north, through Gevrey-Chambertin, Volnay, and now including holdings in Beaujolais. Eventually, most of Burgundy will become part of a giant Boillot sandbox.
