Lioco Pinot Noir Mendocino County 2023

95 Points, James Suckling – 91 Points, Vinous

This Mendocino County Pinot represents Matt’s breakthrough into affordable excellence. The dense clay soils strewn with stones provide juicy red-fruitedness, while the surprisingly cold climate in this interior region creates wines with remarkable finesse. The wine is incredibly bright with Bing cherries, strawberries, and rhubarb up front with some herbs and tea leaf notes that follow.

James Suckling fawned over this baby calling it, “Fresh and medium-bodied, complex and intriguing, with appealing aromas of redwood forest, rose petals and grilled herbs.” Vinous’ Antonio Galloni fell for the “Savory herbs and white pepper nuances” and finished his review by emphatically calling this “an excellently balanced, supple, mid-weight Pinot that vastly overdelivers at its price point”. Music to our ears!

95 Points, James Suckling
This fresh and medium-bodied wine is complex and intriguing, with appealing aromas of redwood forest, rose petals and grilled herbs. Wild berry flavors integrate with juicy tannins and mouthwatering acidity. Notes of bergamot and herb tea linger in the long finish. Good value. Drink now.

91 Points, Vinous
Black tea, dried red cherry, orange peel and dusty florals open beautifully as the 2023 Pinot Noir (Mendocino County) coasts across the palate. Savory herbs and white pepper nuances from the 15% whole clusters add further complexity as gentle tannins perk up on the finish. It’s an excellently balanced, supple, mid-weight Pinot that vastly overdelivers at its price point.

Not many wine dreams can trace their start back to an alleyway, but that’s exactly where LIOCO was born. In an alleyway behind Spago Beverly Hills, Matt Licklider fantasized about crafting wines that favored nuance over sheer power with his buddy, Spago’s beverage director Kevin O’Connor. In 2005, driven by a passion for European finesse, Matt, his wife Sara, and his buddy Kevin decided to make their dream a reality and they started LIOCO wines as a ‘virtual winery’ selling cases out of their own homes.

Flash forward two decades and LIOCO has become a monster in the market. Matt Licklider and his team have been on fire. Fueled by a relentless search for meticulously farmed cool-climate vineyards, LIOCO’s tiny-production, single-vineyard wines have charmed sommeliers from coast to coast. To make matters worse (or better, depending on where you’re sitting) critics continue to eat up each new release, sending demand soaring, and making these some of the hardest California Pinot Noirs to secure.
