Big and brash and dark purple in hue, the wine exudes aromas of fresh picked fresh boysenberry, black cherry, and plum with cocoa, violets, sage and even a kiss of cedar. It’s a voluptuous wine with chewy, supple tannins that are actually amazing round and smooth already. There’s even a little extra flair from some Syrah added this year, though make no mistake this is a heavily Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend. You can enjoy this big boy right now, but for sure, this is the kind of BIG RED that could use a little cellar time. Once you pop that cork though – you better be ready to go!

Surprisingly, the 2022 Leviathan Red Wine may outshine the 2021 vintage. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 6% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Syrah and 2% Petit Verdot, it’s loaded with black cherries and cassis. Still not overly complex, it’s a big, full-bodied and crowd-pleasing red wine that proves you don’t need to have residual sugar or use Mega Purple to fill this niche. Velvety textured, fruit-forward and long on the finish, it’s a fun, easy-drinking wine at a regular-person price.

The 2022 Red Wine comes from a mix of Napa, Sonoma, Lake County, and is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 6% Merlot, 3% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. Red and black fruits, leafy herbs, cedarwood, and truffly earth notes all emerge on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, solid balance, and outstanding length.
Annie Favia (Favia Wines) and Andy Erickson (Screaming Eagle) are arguably the most formidable winemaking pair in the country. A few years back the two had the idea to birth Leviathan– a project centered around making the biggest and best red wine each vintage. Only one wine, nothing held back.
Together using their ample connections and many of the same vineyard locations that go into Favia wines, the two source Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot for each year’s blend and in 2022 they even decided to add a little splash of Syrah. Suffice it say, they absolutely knocked it out of the park. The 2022 is a gentle monster that Parker’s Wine Advocate argued, “may even outshine the 2021 vintage.” That’s saying something!
