96-100 Points, Wine Enthusiast

The Le Réviseur XO is an Extra Old Cognac, meaning its youngest eaux-de-vie must be at least 10 years old, although in practice they are often much older. The extended aging in oak casks contributes to a beautiful mahogany color and a complex profile. Tasting notes for the XO often mention a harmonious blend of vanilla and wood, followed by an elegant “rancio”—a nutty, earthy characteristic that comes from long-term aging. Wine Enthusiast deemed it a potentially perfect bottling worthy of a 100-point score and implored their readers to “Find and buy.”

Aromas feature plums, red berries, raisins, cherry preserves and poppy seed. The palate entry is sleek and woody sweet; the midpalate finds flavors of pipe tobacco, marzipan, dark caramel, fudge and chocolate orange. Finishes stately yet vivacious. Find and buy.

What makes Le Réviseur truly unique is its “Single Estate” philosophy. This means that every step of the production process, from the cultivation of the grapes (primarily Ugni Blanc) to the distillation, aging, blending, and bottling, all happens on their own property, the Domaine du Maine Drilhon.

This level of control ensures a consistent and authentic expression of their specific terroir. While many of the big Cognac houses blend spirits from different growers and regions, Le Réviseur’s approach is more akin to a single malt whisky or a single-vineyard wine, giving the finished product a distinctive character.

The “Petite Champagne” designation is one of the six crus of the Cognac region. It is second only to the more famous Grande Champagne, but many connoisseurs believe it offers a comparable level of quality. The region’s soil is a mix of limestone and clay over a chalky subsoil, and the eaux-de-vie produced here are known for their elegance, finesse, and a rich, floral and fruity character.
