Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano 2024

93 Points, James Suckling92 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is a reference-point bottling from one of Italy’s greatest female winemakers of all time, Elisabetta Geppetti. Her recently released 2024 Morellino di Scansano is a stunner, earning 93 points from James Suckling who called it “crunchy, crisp and bright…a joy to drink every day” and 92 more from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which called it a “phenomenal value.” At our price? That couldn’t ring more true!

The wine offers lots of juicy red currant, raspberry, and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme – the aromas ooze out of the bottle and you can practically smell a full range of garden veggies and fruits on the nose. The palate is just so soft, supple and beautiful. Medium-bodied with a touch of spice at the finish, it’s the kind of everyday Tuscany that actually has soul and sophistication. Pair it with everything, especially at a backyard BBQ with a slight chill, and you will be the star of the party.

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $17.50.

The Fattoria le Pupille 2024 Morellino di Scansano is led by Sangiovese with small percentages of Alicante and Ciliegiolo that bring extra brightness and energy. In Maremma, complex soils of volcanic deposits layered with ancient marine sediments define the character of the region, and for this wine, the Sangiovese is planted on sandstone soils that enhance elegance and aromatic lift, while other parcels feature pietra serena, red clays and limestone matched carefully to the appropriate variety. The bouquet offers redcurrant, myrtle and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme, evoking the herb garden that lines the walkway to the estate’s newly inaugurated tasting room and visitor center. This wine offers phenomenal value.

Fattoria Le Pupille is an elite Italian winery located in the Maremma region of Tuscany. Founded in the 1970s, the estate has become a symbol of quality and innovation in Italian winemaking.

Under the guidance of Elisabetta Geppetti, Le Pupille has spent the last few decades in a category at the top amongst the very best players. She inherited the winery in 1985 and, with a keen eye for potential, expanded the vineyards and elevated the quality of the wines. A pivotal moment came with the collaboration with the legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis in the early 1980s, which significantly influenced the winery’s style.

Today, these are considered some of the very best Italian collectors one could seek out, especially given the price gap between this bad boy and some of its more well-known competition.
