I’ve featured Tre Bicchieri winners before such as Feudi Di San Gregorio’s Greco di Tufo and Fattoria Zerbina’s Ceregio, but never before one that also had a perfect five star rating. Today’s Italian white takes the cake. It even has me offering up a Gavi for the first time in a while.
La Toledana was built in the first half of the 16th century by the noble Genoese Imperiale family before being acquired by the Lercari family and later to the Cambiaso family. It’s been a staple in Piedmont for hundreds of years with a consistency in quality that very few can touch. Their 2019 Cortese di Gavi is absolutely electric.
For those of you who are worried that it’s 2019, fret not, this one was made for aging – it is a true Piedmont white wine. The Gambero Rosso gushed about its aging potential as well as the historic and unique plot from which it comes. They also raved about the impeccable freshness, which even with a few years of bottle age is abundantly present. This is a star.
The best part is I did my homework on this one so our price is absolutely the best in the country and by a long shot as well. Maybe the others don’t realize the gold they have?
$30 on release by the winery, for this old-vine masterpiece. $27.94/btl the cheapest you can find anywhere online. But today, for a short while, a run don’t walk deal here at Nicholas Wines!

Tre Bicchieri + 5 Stars – Gambero Rosso
An expression of courtesy that reaches its maximum splendor revealing, first of all, a great potential for aging. In a historic and unique plot here is an intense floral bouquet wrapped in a mineral veil between almond and peach grains. Splendid on the palate with a growing volume timed out by an impeccable freshness.

One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.
This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
