Joel’s story is a modest one– it’s the familiar American dream story, a hustler who was a nice, well liked guy in the food and wine industry, and finished first — making countless friends and connections along the way.
Joel’s story starts in the early 1990’s when he and his brother Duncan, both fifth generation Californians in the wine business, saved up enough money to buy Palisades Market in Calistoga. Eventually the two put enough blood and sweat equity into the project to grow it into a must-stop shop in the Napa area, known as THE purveyor of gourmet food and fine wine.
The biggest takeaway Joel learned from his time in the retail wine industry was this: $15 is the magic price. If you had good wines available for $15-20, people were willing to take a chance on the wine, even if they hadn’t tried it before. Nothing sold like a good under $20 wine that pairs well with food.
And so Joel and his wife set out to start “Joel Gott Wines”, a brand of multiple varietals all priced under $20, all food friendly. Twenty years and countless connections later, Joel Gott represents some of the best bargain wines in California, Oregon and Washington. They snuck into the Wine Spectator top 20 last year in their annual Top 100 Wines of the Year list, and they continue to make wines that are priced fairly and over deliver.

100 Pts, International Wine Report – 98 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 98 Pts, James Suckling
“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
