93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
There’s an intense ripeness and bold power to this blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah from the Languedoc, offering dark boysenberry aromas at the core sprinkled with hints of garrigue. Grippy tannins frame the berry-driven sip, which benefits from pinches of thyme and pepper on the palate.
Jeff Carrel Les Darons Rouge Langeuedoc 2024
93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
“Les Darons” means “The Parents” in Parisian suburb slang where Jeff grew up. It’s a nod to the ancient vines this wine comes from. We’re talking 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah grown on parched, high-elevation terraces above Laure-Minervois, every row planted before 1975. Some vines are even now approaching 85 years in age.
The 2024 vintage was so special that Jeff didn’t even blend in his usual Carignan—just pure old-vine Grenache and Syrah expressing the rocky terraces that are more similar to northern Rhône than southern.
Wine Enthusiast gave it 93 points: “Intense ripeness and bold power… dark boysenberry aromas sprinkled with hints of garrigue. Grippy tannins frame the berry-driven sip, with pinches of thyme and pepper.”

MORE INFO
Jeff Carrel graduated with a National Diploma in Oenology from Montpelier in 1994, then toured France working everywhere from Loire to Alsace to Priorat. In 2003, he stepped back from working for others to focus on his vision in Languedoc. The result? A wine that now appears in every village bistro and Michelin-starred restaurants across Western Europe.
“Les Darons” means “The Parents” in the slang of the Parisian suburbs in which Carrel grew up. He chose the name for this cuvée due to the age of the old vines from which the 2024 “Les Darons” was drawn. Most years, it’s comprised of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan but in 2024, Jeff thought his Grenache and Syrah was so pure and delicious he decided not to even blend in Carignan, making for one of the rare Grenache/Syrah only ‘Les Darons’ blends.
