Il Poggione Brunello Di Montalcino 2020

95 Pts, Vinous – 94 Pts, James Suckling – 94 Pts, Jeb Dunnuck – 94 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94 Pts, Wine Spectator

As seems to always be the case with Il Poggione, this is one of the best examples of Brunello of the vintage. Contrary to popular belief, the 2020 vintage in Montalcino was actually exceptionally good. It’s only crime was that it dare be smushed between the 2019 and the 2021 vintages that have stolen all the fanfare. But that just means there are gems like this available if you know where to look.

This is super approachable from the jump. Almost as soon as its poured in the glass, it begins to open up and come alive. We’re talking pure, fruit-forward Sangiovese perfection: with layers of dark cherry and plum wrapped in notes of tobacco and baking spice, all supported by well-integrated tannins that can only come from decades-old vines. This is Brunello that displays both power and elegance from the first sip. It’s the kind of wine that defines why collectors obsess over great Montalcino. Vinous captured it perfectly in their rave review: “The 2020 is seamless from start to finish.“

95 Points, Vinous
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is explosive, bright and punchy at first, evolving from cranberry to cherry with dusty sage, spiced blood orange and Tuscan dust. The is pure elegance, texturally deep and nearly velvety in feel with a core of tart wild berries that add contrast as a balsamic tinge emerges along with fine-grained tannins toward the close. It finishes long, structured and staining, leaving a flinty sensation and primary core of fruit that drenches the palate as violet inner florals and hints of lavender abound. The 2020 is seamless from start to finish and, while more approachable than a typical vintage of Il Poggione, is balanced for an extended maturation.

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
Showing very nice results, with greater accessibility in this vintage, the Il Poggione 2020 Brunello di Montalcino has dark fruit aromas with blackcurrant followed by something spicy or herbal. I am reminded of licorice root, exotic spice, pressed rose and fragrant tea leaf. It finishes smoothly with silky tannins and an open-knit approach. This vintage is almost ready to drink, and you get elegant complexity at the same time. It sees three years in oak botti. Fruit is sourced across vineyards with 25-year-old-plus vines.

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
A saturated red color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is pretty and inviting with aromas of baked cherries, toasted spices, cedar, dark cocoa, and rosemary. Full-bodied, it retains an even spine of acidity, plush tannins, and a savory and sanguine, mouthwatering finish. Hints of iron-rich earth frame the wine beautifully, and it’s a generous wine with a lot to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years.

94 Points, Wine Spectator
This red is rich and dense, woven with flavors of cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth, iron and tobacco. Combines power and grace, with fine balance. The finish echoes the fruit and spice notes. Best from 2028 through 2045.

94 Points, James Suckling
A restrained mix of licorice and graphite, bright red cherries and toasted notes. Firm tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate with refreshing acidity. Chewy style overall.

A gem of a Brunello that can be drunk now or held for the next five years.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate recently declared, “Il Poggione always makes some of the smoothest and most texturally enriched wines in the appellation, and this vintage is no exception.” I would 100% agree with that statement. For me, it comes down to a couple of distinct advantages that the winery has over their peers.

First, the wine is made from the oldest vines on the estate, which is itself one of the oldest active vineyards in the region (planted in 1964). Secondly, those old roots have entrenched themselves deep into the steep slope of the hillside vineyard perched between 1000 and 1500 feet above sea level. This gives their wines character and immense depth that others couldn’t possibly replicate. It also helps the father-son team of Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci to craft a tightly interwoven masterpiece with bright cherry and plum flavors even with little water to go around.
