Il Poggio Falanghina Guerriero Beneventano 2024

90 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast

This is Falanghina in all its glory including the golden color coming out of the bottle. This is a summer special with an inviting nose that leads with ripened tropical fruit aromas, and pronounced notes of white flowers and Mediterranean salinity. The flavor is both balanced and rich with fresh and ripe fruit all held tightly together. Great with food, especially seafood, this is a smooth, easy-sipping southern Italian white that will over-deliver.

“On the nose, lemons, oranges and yellow apples are balanced with toasted almonds and honeysuckle. The palate brings more yellow apples, plus the density of quince and lemon curd, before a unifying finish of almond paste with a sprinkle of salt.”

Il Poggio has been in the Fusco family’s hands for generations. These folks aren’t managing a brand —they’re true stewards of something their family has built and taken care of for almost two hundred years. That matters when you taste the wine.

The winery sits in Sannio, a little-known corner of southern Campania that honestly doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves. It’s inland, not easy to reach, with steep hills everywhere. But that’s exactly why it works for wine. The ancient Greeks knew it, the Samnites fought over it, the Romans understood it. All that history is baked into the terroir.

Today, two ambitious brothers, Carmine and Marco Fusco, run the place alongside their families, growing native grapes and making serious wine from a region most people have never heard of. That’s the kind of authenticity you can taste in the bottle.
