Howard Park Flint Rock Shiraz 2023

93 Points, James Suckling – 93 Points, James Halliday

Famed Australian critic James Halliday put it in the most Australian way possible when he summed up his rave write-up by calling it “A good drink in anyone’s book.” But he’s not wrong, this is the quintessential ‘mass appeal’-type Syrah. James Suckling gave it 93 points and called it: “Soft and floral with underlying power. Very good.”

This is a gorgeous under-$20 bottling with great aromatics of black fruit, baking spices, fresh cracked pepper with red currants and some bramble notes. It’s delicious and supple, a full-bodied and rich number that never feels heavy or light, but right in the Goldilocks middle. The tannins are plump and soft, the fruit is juicy and fresh, and everything here works seamlessly together.

Original price was: $24.00.Current price is: $19.00.

The nose is spice-driven, with aromas of Damson plums, dark cherries, white pepper and blackberries. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of mocha, granite, violets and spices. Soft and floral with underlying power. Very good. Drink or hold.

Intense dark-red hue, and intense flavours, too. Loads of brown spices, some pepper and mace infuse the black plums, squid ink and ferrous. Full-bodied and rich, but what’s pleasing, it’s not weighty or heavy – the palate is supple as the tannins are plump and soft, then the acidity keeps everything on track. Good drink in anyone’s book.

Howard Park is one of Australia’s OGs, a family-owned winery on the gorgeous West Coast in Margaret River that’s having a serious moment right now. The Burch family took over from founder John Wade decades ago and has been quietly building on that strong foundation ever since, and has already passed the torch to the new generation.
