97 Points, James Suckling
Blackberry, slate, lead pencil, black currant, and wet earth. Excellent pedigree. Medium to full body with exquisite tannins that run the length of the wine and show intensity and focus. The purity of the cab character shows such clarity and resonates back to the great cabs of the 1970s. A blend of cab from the vineyards: Martha’s, Trailside, Howell Mountain, and Linda Falls. Drinkable but better in four or five years.
Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Lot C-91 Napa Valley 2019
97 Points, James Suckling
Ever since the 1969 vintage in Joe Heitz’s earliest days, the Lot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon from Heitz has represented one of the most consistently excellent, ultra-refined Cabernet bottlings made anywhere in the world. Blending fruit from Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena and Howell Mountain is certainly a recipe for success but when you also factor in the winemaking prowess and the meticulous attention to detail, you can see why this has become such an age-worthy collector’s item.
The 2019 release is a game-changer. James Suckling gave it 97 points and called it a throwback to “the great Cabs of the 1970s,” praising its “blackberry, slate, lead pencil, black currant, and wet earth” with “exquisite tannins that run the length of the wine.”

MORE INFO
Back in 1969, Joe Heitz created something revolutionary: Lot C-91, a special combination of micro parcels primarily from Martha’s Vineyard that was so exceptional he bottled it separately. Only 125 cases were made, and those bottles now sell at auction for $1,200-$1,500. This modern recreation represents the culmination of 50 years of tireless effort and the continual desire to make a unique expression of Heitz Cellar’s heralded vineyards.
This is an iconic winery that helped shape the history of Napa Valley winemaking, creating the valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon. This Lot C-91 represents everything they’ve learned in six decades of winemaking— the best Cabernet fruit from their most celebrated sites, blended with the precision that made Joe Heitz a legend.
