HdV Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard Napa Valley 2023

99 Points, James Suckling – 96 Points, Vinous

There is no exaggeration when I say this is one of the very best domestic Chardonnays made every year by arguably the greatest duo in winemaking: Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine (of DRC fame). It’s even been featured as high as the #3 Wine of the Year from Wine Spectator when it had a 99-point score. With 99 points once again, this is one to look out for at the top of end of year lists.

This is still so young, but it already flaunts its elegance and purity. The fruit here is so crisp and delicious. The complexity consistently builds with just a little time in the glass. Slowly, it develops layers of vanilla and lemon curds with citrus notes, piercing minerality, and a tinge of natural acidity all working together in unison. This Chardonnay is straight poetry in motion.

99 Points, James Suckling
This wine is truly excellent, showing a mineral-edged nose with pure energy and tension. Aromas of struck match, citrus blossoms, crushed stones and salted nuts. The palate is taut, with no hard edges and driving acidity that keeps you salivating for minutes. Closing in on perfection. Drink or hold.

96 Points, Vinous
“The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard is airy, gracious and understated. It’s a wine of restraint, even for this house. Seamless and elegant in the glass, the Hyde is exquisitely finessed. Today, the 2023 is rather quiet, but time in bottle should help this really blossom. Aeration brings out the wine’s mid-palate oiliness and texture. The Hyde was aged 70% in barrel, 20% in foudre and 10% in concrete. The precision here is unreal.”

Right on the edge of the Carneros AVA line, sits one of the most famous vineyards in the world, Hyde Vineyard.

The vineyard was planted by Larry Hyde himself, one of America’s greatest wine minds, and provides fruit for many of the region’s elite wineries. Sure, the Chardonnay grown there is some of the most expensive per acre, but David Ramey, Marc Aubert, Steve Kistler, Paul Lato and countless others will tell you, it’s every bit worth the price of admission.

The other winemaker who makes this project so dang special is Aubert de Villaine, President and Winemaker at DRC – so much so that he went all in becoming equal partners with Larry Hyde in their Hyde de Villaine project.

It might just be one of the greatest partnerships the wine world has ever known. Together, both these wine titans have forgotten more about wine than most of us will ever know. Their work with Burgundian varietals is second to none, and together the two have built up allocation waitlists that are a mile long.

If you’ve been reading my emails for any length of time, then you already know that my decades long support for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and their fleet of the world’s greatest Burgundies has led to a very solid relationship between Aubert de Villaine and myself.
