Hall wines always light up the scoreboard both here at Nicholas Wines and on all the expert reviewers tasting charts. Robert Parker Jr. wrote about them nearly 15 years ago declaring, “If you haven’t jumped on the Hall bandwagon, it has been loaded with goodies for the last 3-4 years.”
The winery’s entire lineup from top to bottom is as reliable as it gets, and our relationship with Kathryn has always gotten us phenomenal deals on wines that are already criminally under priced. That’s my two cents, but don’t let Kathryn know.
The negative is that the wines don’t really need our help to sell and our offerings are too few and too far between. So it’s been almost two years since our last. I think it goes without saying that if you’re a fan, you should stock up.

The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
For those of you looking for a semi-dry Riesling to pair with seafood, salads, pastas or poultry, you don’t have to look any further. Ratzenberger is a benchmark in the region and their consistency in making expressive, classy Riesling continues with the newly released 2019 Kabintt Feinherb. It manages to bring to the table savory, sweet and tangy acidic notes. It’s a versatile bottle of white, that’s for sure.
The sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the indigenous variety, Arneis. Stefano Almondo is a master of the rare variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best white wines in Italy. The newly released 2021 Vigne Sparse dazzles right out of the bottle; floral and fruity with juicy peaches and apricots yet with a chalky mineral streak as well. As always, it’s such a complex white and the kicker is its finish which goes on for a minute of pure joy.
