Günther Steinmetz Riesling Trocken GW Wintricher Geierslay 2019

97 Points, James Suckling

“This is an amazing dry Mosel with breathtakingly intense minerality and herbal freshness that makes the flavors so vibrant and finely etched. That it’s only medium-bodied makes it even more delightful. Cascading stone fruit and minerals at the super long finish. Drink or hold.”

Günther Steinmetz is a name synonymous with high-quality Mosel Riesling, though the winery’s legacy is now carried forward by the fourth generation, Stefan and his wife Sammie. The estate, located in the village of Brauneberg, has a history spanning over a century, with Stefan’s father, also named Günther, establishing the reputation for quality that the winery holds today.

The Steinmetz family is dedicated to a “natural viticulture” philosophy, which means they avoid the use of herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. They also carefully control yields and hand-harvest all of their grapes from extremely steep vineyard slopes, a labor-intensive process that ensures the highest quality fruit. This meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard is a key factor in the distinct character of their wines.

In the cellar, their philosophy of minimal intervention is king. The wines are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and are made without any additives. This approach allows the wines to be an authentic reflection of their unique terroir. They make a delicious full-range of Rieslings, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, all of which are known for their grace, harmony, and mineral expression.
