Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino 2021

#18 Wine of the Year, 2025 (Italian Expert, Kerin O’Keefe)

99 Points, James Suckling – 98 Points, Kerin O’Keefe

Fuligni sits on the prime eastern slopes of Montalcino at 420 meters elevation with iconic winemaker Paolo Vagaggini (Biondi Santi) calling the shots. Under Maria Flora Fuligni’s stewardship, they’ve become synonymous with Brunellos that bridge tradition and modern polish. In the 2021 vintage, it outpointed titans like Il Marroneto, both of Casanova di Neri’s Riservas, as well as the flagships from Poggio di Sotto and Argiano.

This is a homerun bottling from one of Italy’s greatest estate, Fuligni. Suckling went nuts for it, writing “Its finesse and vision tell you why Brunello is great. Long, vivid and beautifully balanced. Already a joy to taste, but best after 2027.” I am telling you, Brunello lovers, that the 2021s are not to be missed, and Fuligni is the crème de la crème in 2021.

So perfumed and seductive on the nose, with black cherries, minerals and rose petals that follow through to a medium body with ultra-fine tannins. Its finesse and vision tell you why Brunello is great. Long, vivid and beautifully balanced. Already a joy to taste, but best after 2027.

98 Points, Kerin O’Keefe – Wine Enthusiast
Lavender, eucalyptus, dark spice, new leather and juniper berry aromas shape the beautiful nose on the 2021 Fuligni Brunello. All about class and finesse, the palate boasts great intensity, delivering ripe Marasca cherry, blood orange, star anise and rosemary alongside vibrant acidity. Taut, refined tannins lend support. While incredibly tempting, this is still young so give it time to reach its full potential.

96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Displaying a jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino is refreshing and complete, with ripe red cherries, orange peel, dusty earth, potpourri, cocoa, and bright spice on the nose, along with hints of floral incense and delicate smoky earth. The palate is medium to full-bodied and energetic, with refined, angular tannins, zesty lift, and balanced length that keeps it classic and vibrant. I love this vintage for Fuligni, and it should continue to improve with time.

Fuligni is one of the best producers of wine in Italy, let alone Brunello di Montalcino. In the ‘Grand cru’ part of Brunello as Ian D’Agata calls it, Fuligni’s execution of top-tier Sangiovese winemaking is consistently elite. As with the strict Brunello guidelines, their Sangiovese is aged for four years, of which approximately two and a half are in wood.

With its elegant combination of fruit and spicy aromas, the Fuligni Brunello is, in any case, the result of carefully selected grapes coming from low yields per hectare and is not produced in years when the quality of the harvested grapes is not suitable to maintain the high standards of the estate. For this reason, every bottling you see is fantastic.
